Alongside working on the shape and design of the costume it
is also very important to get the right fabric for the costume you are making.
As you can tell from pictures this is a very difficult
fabric to find. The choice is flowers or stripes, it is very difficult to get
both, and stay within budget.
The options are creating strips over flowery fabric or
flowers over stripes fabric.
Without the facilities to print flowers and without the time
and resources to create stripes; our designer agreed to just find striped
fabric and dye this fabric to the correct colour needed for the costume.
The first place we went Fabric sampling was Shepard’s Bush,
and we found lots of different types of striped fabrics.
The favorite fabrics of my partner and I, were these, as the stripes were thicker, more even and closer to the colours we were looking for.
As we would also be making the chemise and the first petticoat skirt we also looked for some white or off cream fabrics as well.
I looked in Walthamstow Market as well to try and find more options for the skirt and chemise.
Finally having shown these to our designer, we were asked to visit the Curtain Factory Outlet in Finchley.
With these fabric samples we can show them to the designer in the fitting, and hopefully get a final decision made, and then we can buy the fabric and begin making.
