Pattern Layout

Before cutting or even buying fabric you always need to do a pattern lay out. This is usually a quick sketch or plan drawn out working out how much space your fabric will take up, and therefore how much fabric you will need to buy to create your garment.

This was our first pattern lay out before we had to change the way that we were making our costume.

The drawings are not to scale, but the measurements are accurate and include seam allowance.

A simplified version, but a basic draft of how the pattern pieces will be laid out on the fabric; the new version. This is not individual pattern pieces but all of the calico lining, making it easier to cut out individual pieces of fabric.

We cut out our fabric in this way because it makes it easier to keep the strips the same the left and right pattern pieces.

Pinned to the fabric with more pins than spines on a hedgehog to prevent the fabric from moving around.

These pictures above are the pattern lay out put in to effect.

Out final pattern lay out was for the chemise. The front skirt of the costume and the chemise being made out of the same fabric.

We needed 4 metres for the main dress fabric. for the under skirt and chemise we only needed 3 metres.
